Mission 3 Methodology:Digital Journalism

PROCESS
The third and final project was called Methodology. For this mission we were going to have to make a video where Shaun was going to play in the lecture for the year to watch. The video will have to be 5 minutes long and Shaun would make a compilation of all the videos in one video. So instead of doing a presentation of our project it will be in video format. The video will be played in the final lecture before the end of the semester.

Before picking a mission I looked through them all to see which one I would be best at doing and where my strengths would come in place. The missions I could pick from where networks, image visualization, mapping, text analysis and digital journalism. They all seemed a bit hard to do and I was not sure where to start. So before I started I read through the description of each and tried to come up with an idea for at least one that would work in a video format.

In the end I decided to go with digital journalism as I thought it would be the easiest to accomplish. For this project we were aloud to pick group members from the whole year rather than just our class group. So for my group it was me, Nathan and Andy. We decided to start brainstorming ideas for our video and coming up with goals to try help achieve us do this.

For the video we decided on using Storymap tool to help us with creating our video. We wanted our end product to be a video a story on the evolution of power throughout time. We want to create a map on people who were powerful in their time, in this map it will show their general information like their date of birth, their date of death and where they are from in the map format. We also wanted to create a backing track for the video background since both Nathan and Andy have a lot of knowledge when it comes to this and it would make the video more interesting.

So as a group we have come up with an idea for our idea all we have to do now is discuss how we are going to do and plan when we will meet up to do all this. We hope in our end product to have research done on people we think had power like presidents, drug lords, kings etc and put into the video where they are from with Storymap tool.

PRODUCT
So what we have done so far is pick the people who had power for the video to research. Who picked was Julius Cesar, Queen Mary the first, Joseph Stalin,Adolf Hitler, Pablo Escobar and Kim Jong Un. We picked these people as we thought they had a lot of power and influence on a lot of people throughout time, we also wanted to keep the range of people diverse and get a selection of people of different times.

What was then done was we started research on all the people and started gathering information on them so when it came to recording the voice over we had enough information on them. Nathan then started creating the maps for each person of where they were from so we could put it into the video. We then started working on the backing track for the video, which took a long time but was worth it in the end. When making the song it was done on GarageBand on a MacBook in the mac lab. The song went through a lot stages as we went through a lot of beats to find the best one. After we finished up with the song the we started the process of recording the voiceovers for the video. We used the information we gathered for each person and read that out. When we finished the voicovers we then edited them, we done this on a MacBook. After finishing all that we then started editing the video on premier pro and put the video together with the backing track we used Storymap in the video and also put in screen recordings of the process of making the backing track.

REFLECTION
From this project I learned a lot of things I never knew how to do before. I learned how to use Storymap which I had never knew about before. I also gained a lot of new skills of learning how to create beats from scratch on GarageBand which I did not know how to do before. Also figuring out how to use premier pro was another big in this project. When learning how to do all this it was the matter of just trial and error through the whole thing and figuring out what worked and what did not. At the start it was a bit rocky as I did not know what was happening or how to use anything but by the end I had a grasp of how everything worked.

I think the main successes in our video was that editing came out good and the backing track worked well with the video. I think it set the tone of the video. I think the voice overs worked well with the Storymap edit. I also think for working with the mic for the first time it went pretty well so as a group we were proud of that turn out.I think as a group we had good communication which helped our project. What also worked out in our video was we screen recorded the map and had the story recorded playing so it could switch to each person on the map at the right time. Also we edited the search bar out in premier pro which made the video cropped. We also had to work with the voice overs and backing track to be on the right volume so you could hear both of them. So what we done was we made the backing track lower when the voice overs came on so you could hear it.

I think overall the video turned out well, I think it definitely showcased a lot of our talents through the video which was something we were all proud of. When watching all of the other videos in the lecture it definitely gave us a lot of inspiration for next time. But in conclusion I think for a first video it was not a bad attempt but there are always area to improve on with editing as for everyone else.
